Videos of 2nd November Episode have been uploaded

Date: November 3, 2007  Category: Main

All the videos of 2nd November episode have been uploaded. This time I am not too late and I have also included comments on individual performances. Hope you like them.

There were some very good performances today. Toshi excelled in both ‘Lagan Lagi’ and ‘Mera Piya Ghar Aaya’. Abhaas was very good in ‘Main Hoon Don’. And I liked Harshit’s rendition of ‘Phirta Rahoon’ better than Toshi’s rendition of same, couple of weeks back.

Overall, as one of the guest judges said, ‘Music is the winner today’.

Enjoy!

A very wrong choice of elimination on this episode. From the participants who were remaining. I am an international viewer watching this show from Dar es Salaam Tanzania. Toshi getting eliminated is one of the down falls of the show. I am sorry to say but there is no charm now after Toshi once again leaving the show. I guess the only hope is Harshit now. But then Toshi was different and unique all together. Too sad for the public who just votes abruptly!

  4. Shahzad on November 3rd, 2007 9:37 am

It’s true that no one can single like TOSHI.
May Almighty Allah bless him with more success in the life. I can’t imagine how cab he be eliminated from the show he was the topper for the last two shows and suddenly we find him out of the show. What a rubbish ?
Any how the show must go on and this is the reality.

VOICE OF INDIA- A WORLD PERSPECTIVE:

From amongst the Bemisaal Barah if we were to choose one contestant to represent India in a Voice of the World contest who would it be and why?

I would like to think that Toshi would be a very strong contender. We would love to send a singer who can bowl over the oppositoin with our traditional, yet entertaining, alaps, taans, harkatein and layakari. Would anyone have an answer to Toshi’s repertiore and bag of tricks - possibly not.

Why then this obsession with PLAYBACK SINGING across all talent hunt shows in India?

Are we becoming a society that is so obsessed with the REEL that the REAL does not appeal to us anymore?

I would like to think not, but may be the judges on these talent hunt shows who are mostly related to Bollywood are so caught up in their own tinsel town world that they fail to see beyond it.

Whilst I am no fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan does he not have more world-wide acclaim compared to any of our Bollywood singers including our most revered and respected Lataji?

Go into any Music Shop in a western country and the only Indian music related CDs you are likely to find are those of Pandit Ravishankar, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and possibly Ustad Zakir Hussain.

One of the guest judges rightly said yesterday - TOSHI IS THE VOICE OF THE WORLD. I guess he was just trying to counter the CINEMATIC Harshit hype, but I dont think he was far from the truth.

Toshi may not be the voice of the world, but I think he would make a worthy contestant representing India and its musical heritage in a Voice of the World Contest.

Whils the world recognises true talent from the Indian subcontinent, why is it that we fail to recognise our own?

Can you imagine Toshi singing Mera Piya Ghar aya at a World Idol contest- he would have the audiences going crazy.

Now can you imagine Abhas, Harshit or even Amanat Ali (who I consider to be far superior all round singer to any across the current Saregamapa and VOI series), the response would be so dull- rite?

    Your comments are most welcome.

    Cheers
    Zaki

  6. Sheba on November 3rd, 2007 10:47 am

Both performances were par excellence. Nusrat saab would have been proud of Toshi’d rendetion. Zaki, this is what I was thinking last night while watching the show…there are a lot of people in India who can sing like Harshit or Abhas (I can’t even bear to talk about Ishmeet) in India. I can think of atleast a few guys from my college who sand atleast as well as Harshit. I must say that Abhas has a beautiflu, crystal clear voice. Toshi on the other hand isn’t your regular singer. He is in a league of his own and has more of a universal appeal, similar to Nurat saab and he is fabulous!!
Thank you Toshi for amazing us with your performances and singing. I can’t wait to hear your first recorded song.
J, a sincere thanks to you for this fabulous website. It’s been terrific. and yes, I will not be eager to watch the show now…its like any other talent hunt where mediocricy will be crowned king.

  7. Harold on November 3rd, 2007 11:38 am

Let me put in my two cents worth. We can all talk about our favourite singer in godlike manner etc. That is ok. As a normal human being, and not a music expert, I base everything on how it sounds to my ear.

Always I prefer Abhaas. It may be just a matter of personal choice - so be it. Toshi was ok in my book but, his voice never captivated me. I must say he sang well last night.

The thing is, we cannot be attacking these singers. They are merely doing what you or I would be doing if we were in their shoes. I think I have a major problem with the show’s organizers and the judges. They don’t treat the contestants with the respect they deserve. At least we should.

No guest or judge should interfere with a contestant’s performance on stage. That is the performer’s time to prove himself, and that time should not be interfered with - in my opinion.

Audience members should not be going on stage in groups also. Let the contestant have that performing time alone.

These finalists are trying hard to succeed - who can blame them? Let us enjoy the entertainment they will bring us and not cut them down needlessly.

  8. jan on November 3rd, 2007 11:53 am

Toshi’s both perfomances were Mind blowing. It is unbelieveble that he is out.But whatever God does he does for one’s good.I totlly agree with Zaki and Sheba. very well written.

  9. Zaki on November 3rd, 2007 11:55 am

    Friends

I agree with Harold’s views entirely about treating the contestants with respect and dignity. Well said!

However, I differ with him on how we evaluate contestants and fully agree with Khayyam Saheb that “Music is something to be learnt seriously and taught properly and the assessment of good performers should be left to public vote”.

Yes, agreed that when these singers go out in the real world they will have to “win the public” to survive just like any artist and there are many examples of brilliant singers not having gained public acclaim.

But a talent show (sorry reality show) which prides itself on Sacche Suron ki Jay Jay kar (Victory be to the Truth of Music)- has a responsibility to ensure that upcoming young singers are assessed properly based on a transparent and open criteria by a variety of knowledgable judges.

To the Abhas supporters good luck, I agree he is the best amongst the remainging contestants. I have a very real fear that he is going to be eliminated next week so that we have a weak singer pitted against Harshit in the finals. Sorry for being cynical, but after watching SVOI for so long, I am beginning to believe that it is all pre-planned!

What is the worst mistake a singer can make on stage whilst perorming live? Hit the wrong notes, miss a beat and possibly the most embarrasing is forget words.

Well Harshit has forgotten his words in two songs and did not even make something up to go with the tune on the spot. The judges should have eliminated him then. It happens to the best, but for God’s sake let us be fair to the ones who are preparing properly and not forgetting their words. After all it is a competition, is it not!

    Cheers
    Zaki

  10. Zaki on November 3rd, 2007 11:57 am

    sorry read above as ..

the assessment of good performers should NOT be left to public vote.

  11. Harold on November 3rd, 2007 12:10 pm

Zaki, I agree with you on that - the public should not be the deciding factor on a great singer’s career.

Also, I fear that Abhaas will suffer the same fate too. Its sad when things could take a turn for the worst. In the beginning it was possible to save the integrity of the show, but not any more.

  12. rossi on November 3rd, 2007 12:27 pm

there is a word as far as i concern…the word is MUSICAL EAR…it comes from listening songs and understanding of music….i mean SUR TAAL TEMPO etc…without considering these just claiming that my ear like him or her doent make n e sense to me.

public perticipation in reality shows is only bcoz of making money…and to me public is not that much fool that they will prefer dull music…all the wrong thing is happening around us bcoz most of us r programmed…for example we r programmed for appreciating SIDHA SIDHA songs sung by Kishore da and others…we r just programmed for listening bollywood types of songs…thats it.

but real music is something dt people r carrying from thousands of years…but what can we do…we r programmed…we cant accept talent that is better than what we r used to listen.

Hope that TOSHI gets the respect dt he deserve…at least from those who have musical ears not from those who have prgrammed ones.

    TAKE CARE ALL

  17. Irfan on November 3rd, 2007 1:03 pm

    Hi all.
I have been hooked onto SVOI since the jaipur auditions when i heard toshi the first time. there has been a lot of talk about his elimination and his comeback and now his elimination again. were there not 33 contestants selected after the auditions and then relegated to just 12 as “bemisal barah” ? but why is everyone talking so much about toshi? the answer is simple. cos of his talent, his immense charisma and amazing stage presense and his simplicity. if u go through all his words (not his singing) u will begin to realize what a honest man he is. even when he mentions his bua he says that “socha tha ke agr gala saath dia to hi kahunga” which means that if he had not sung well that day he would not have mentioned his bua as an excuse.
i must say we all realize what an incredible singer he is, even just regular music lovers who have no knowledge about the intricacies of sur and taal.
now with people like ZAKI giving us insights to his singing, i have come to appreciate his singing talent more than earlier. i am not watching saturday’s SVOI cos for me the competition is over.
Zaki a special thanks to u for ur comments on Toshi’s singing supremacy.
    thanks

STOP WATCHING THIS SHOW THIS IS WE ARE SUPPOSE TO DO.

  19. Shweta on November 3rd, 2007 1:07 pm

Voting system does bring very wierd , unexpected results , but unless people vote for their favourite contestants, they dont get soooo attatched to them. So I think its like a vicious cycle..:P u vote, u get attatched….unexpected results….resentment among people!!!! :(
Hope all of Abhaas’s fans are voting….Harold, :P dont forget :)

    Dear All,

After Irfan & Toshi show left nothing to watch, i personally very disappointed after viewing the results.

My eyes was full of tears while watching the scene of voted out of these two guys.

May ALLAH award them succes on their all steps (Ameen).

Irfan & Toshi don’t worry you both are very strong & brave and you both have very out class voices specially awarded by ALMIGHTY ALLAH and you both will earn BIG NAME in the world and will beat false peoples.

    MAY ALLAH BLESS YOU.

  21. Harold on November 3rd, 2007 1:11 pm

Musical ear or programmed ear - who cares? Let the experts assess music however they will. When I listen to music or when I have to buy a CD, I really don’t care what the experts say. I go on what entertains me - period! That is why is always have liked Abhaas most. That is my personal choice!

As far as voting is concerned. Many people accepted it cheerfully when it worked in favor of their contestant. When it turned the other way, they are complaining. I always believed it was bad.

I have been able to confirm that a hall has been booked for Feb 2008 in NY for Abhaas, Priyani and Harshit. Irfan will be contacted as well. There will be performers from other areas as well. Currently, talks are under way in Toronto to do the same. The NY tour will include some Caribbean countries.

  22. Ali Tariq - Pakistan on November 3rd, 2007 1:36 pm

I am sure that Irfan Toshi out by bogus/ un real voting.
    don’t do such unfair means.

  23. Aks on November 3rd, 2007 2:20 pm

    Hello all

I am Aks from Pakistan and i stumled on to this page and i really appreciate individuals behind this…For me yesterday ended VOI and i really didnt expect that the way night ended…I listen mostly wide range of music but toshi inspired me to listen what represented INDIA…i went through the site and i disagree with a few, yes every individual is unique but toshi well he was complete…and i will agree with Zaki never seen someone singing such a difficult songs so comfortably… i cant listen the studio versions of those songs that toshi sung…they didnot appeal…and all respect to Indians but i was expecting a better decision from them…your heritage is music and how come u overlook someone who song what “India” represented…Harshit is diverse but i get a essences of voice which is a mix of Rafi and Kumar Sanu…Abhaas is great but he lacks that flare toshi has and ishmeet for me an average singer with great potential…

I would like to end my views with one comment
“VOICE OF INDIA” represent what ur nation is made of what it has inherited but i bilieve the people have lost a thought of that and are really looking for a COMMERCIAL voice…u ppl are better than that.

  24. Aks on November 3rd, 2007 2:23 pm

One more thing todays performance lacked the heart and flare which toshi gave and i know all of u agree

  25. kalyani on November 3rd, 2007 2:30 pm

yes zaki , i agree with u.toshi is way above any of the typical bollywood singers. he is truly a voice of the world.the days of melody, using ragas in film songs have gone by, tho they are making a comback on and off.his mera piya ghar aaya was truly mind blowing and brought tears to my eyes, bcoz it was so good.
    saw todays episode.
zillion kudos to abhijeet for taking a stand[unless, that was also scripted, cynicism comes easily after seeing this show].
i have rarely criticised the contestants performances, but today i felt i had to.
harshit sucked big time, he missed lot of words, or did he swallow them deliberately, for reasons best known to him, in dard -e-disco.and his lisp was very very obvious today, tho i dont think its a criteria for his singing abilities.but , lisp in play back singing, i am not too sure, is acceptable.his om shanthi om was also average.
ishmeet was very very below par,and in his koi yahan nach nache, the nache nache pronounciation was horrible.it was naache naache not nache nache, as he pronounced it . it was so obvious, it took away the beauty of the song.sorry ishmeet also sucked big time today.
coming to abhaas, he sang the best of the lot,tho his second song was not so good i thought.but hes definitely the best of the lot,hes versatile, whichs a major advantage, which none of the other two possess.
arjun ramphal provided the humour in the show, when he told harshit , u should b singing for me in the future, arjun himself hardly gets any roles, so where does that leave harshit??hehehe.i just couldnt stop laffing and still cant stop whenever i think abt that comment.
yes, all these stars come to promote their movies, the least the show producers can do is not to ask them to pass comments. they make fools of themselves. how many of them know abt music or are trained in any way??adding to this comment, most viewers are also not equipped to, as repeated ad nauseum by me b4, ppl shd not b given the power to vote, as simple as that.that way u lose talented ppl and one dimensional voices[have taken the liberty to coin this word] turn out to b the winners.
    cheers,

WHY Do THE BEST SINGERS GET ELIMINATED?

Since talent hunt shows turned to Reality Shows we have not had a single deserving candidate win.

I am neither a media expert nor a cynic. But I get the distinct impression this is done purely with the intent of sensanalisation and polarising public opinion and to keep public interest up.

My entire family have been hardcore Toshi fans. I had decided not to tune into SVOI today after Toshi’s elimination. But the rest of my family did tune in not with the intent of enjoying music, but I am sorry to say, in the hope that Abhijeet would say something sensational…

which lo and behold he did!

I wish we could turn the clock back to the pure and simple days of Sa Re Ga Ma where we had legends of Indian music guide and assess talented performers.

If I stop watching such crude reality shows will it make any difference?

Any media experts out there.. your views most welcome.

    Cheers
    Zaki

  28. MOHSIN, NEW YORK CITY, USA on November 3rd, 2007 3:33 pm

After Irfan and Toshi VOI is as good as dead. Of the 3 remaining Harshit has the best voice quality a-la-Kumar Sanu. And he xcels when he imitates Sanu so yeah i disagree with Abhijit that Harshit shud stop singing like Sanu. Even Abhijit used to imitate Kishoreda.
However, wats really dumb is Harshit singing “Phirta rahoo….” Toshi sang that a few weeks ago why the heck did he have to sing it again. Thers zillions of Kumar Sanu’s songs which Harshit cud have done justice too. SVOI u r now just blah.

  29. DS on November 3rd, 2007 3:33 pm

    Harold,

I ask this hesitantly — but will there be any chance of Abhaas being in Boston as part of his itinerary?

This notwithstanding, I would happily travel to NY with my family to listen to him live.

Also, I will be taking the liberty to send you a note regarding this NY tour. I hope you don’t mind.

DS, I hope you got my private reply. I would travel anywhere in North America to see Abhaas live. I am in central Canada, and would be looking forward to a Toronto show.

The demand for the guy is growing, so some business people, including a prominent politician in NY, decided to start the ball rolling.

I looked at the on-screen prog guide and it is all garbled up. Was there a Nov 3 show? I realize in some areas you can see it earlier than others. I saw what appeared to be 2 half hour shows scheduled. Is that wrong? To confirm: Is there a full show tonite - regular time? Please reply

ISHMEET IS THE BEST SINGER……..I LIKE HIS SWEET VOICE…IS REALY PLAYBACK SINGING VOICE…KEEP IT UP BRO…

  37. JeZi on November 3rd, 2007 7:42 pm

Except Ishmeet both are not deserving to be here !

TOSHI - IRFAN for me they should be in final 2. But This Gujji done good job just for money.. we have LOST SVOI not only yesterday even when IRFAN was eliminated . !

No more interest in SVOI .. For me and for music lover those understand what really music is .. except ISHMEET noone to be deserve SVOI.

Anyhow this is shit race going on here .. they have Fooled people and played with people feelings ……. SVOI is not a real show .. SUCK as Indian IDOL was an other shows….!

Abhijeet is really very NICE and his prediction always true !

    C ya bye bye

  38. bilkis on November 3rd, 2007 8:31 pm

Lalit looks like sugreev of ramayan when he laughs. That is the only entertainment part for me otherwise show has nothing to offer.

  39. Harold on November 3rd, 2007 8:38 pm

First, Toshi was getting lots of votes, and the system was fair. Then he got voted out so the system is not good.

Reasons: Votes are being stolen from Toshi; the system is rigged; The Russians are behind it; Pres Bush caused it; etc. It was not because the fans were acting like a bunch of idiots, and that turned people off. The rest of the world is to blame. WOW.

The show will still be great - without Toshi

Fans of Ismit, Harshit and Abhaas: stay tuned. Now we won’t have fanaticism, we will have talent.

  40. Rahul on November 3rd, 2007 9:11 pm

    Harold, I concur with you.

    With regards to today’s performances, Harshit’s darde-disco beat Toshi’s by a wide-margin.

One doesn’t need a ‘musical ear’ or ‘programmed ear’ to come to this conclusion. Hehe!

  41. Jimmy on November 3rd, 2007 9:29 pm

Harold - great to read your comments! I too agree that we finally do not have to deal with fanaticism and can enjoy pure talent. It is a shame that Toshi got eliminated but then hype never lives long. If Toshi has the talent (I think he does in the area of Sufiana singing), he will make a place for himself. VOI has provided him the pedestal and it will be upto him and others as to how they take things from here.

Also, the show on November 3rd was great. Everybody enjoyed it to the fullest!

  42. nagesh on November 3rd, 2007 9:51 pm

listen to Abhijeets comments after Harshits Dard-e-disco performance. WOW

really like the star voice of india show..

  44. Frank on November 4th, 2007 12:09 am

Best part is yesterday when SVOI was running, I did not even care to watch the performances as two of my fav toshi and irfan were not there and I always used to look forward for these two performances.

  45. TNB on November 4th, 2007 1:12 am

Abhijeet couldn’t be more correct. there isn;t any competetion after toshi’s elimination.
the show is down to the final’s and look what these guys are singing “its the time to disco, where’s the party tonight”..horrendous ! this show has already lost its charm. Its only running to crown harshit as the winner. and the reason why i say that (which i’ve also mentined before):

    1) adesh and lalit are desperate for harshit to win which ofcourse will put him in news. and that’s one way they’re planning to market their music as they’ve recently signed harshit to sing for them. So its in their benifit if he wins. I’ve never seen songs being repeated in shows like these. Harshit’s been singing the same songs that toshi had already sung before. are they trying to prove a point here ?? he did a decent job in the first job, but him singing dard-e-dicso was horrible. It was like asking kumar sanu to sing the same song..where’s the passion, energy ?? it all looked so fake..toshi was way better, also raja hassan from saregamapa did a fantastic job earlier. no comparision.

    2) it was quite obvious that toshi and abhaas were not being supported by their own mentors who’ve been busy sucking up to harshit. Very obvious from abhaas’s song selection and his performance. suprisingly he’s being highly praised by them when he’s sung so horribly that i wanted to shut the tv. that’s condescending bullshit !

i feel bad for talent that’s being handled by manupulative crooks !

  46. Prem on November 4th, 2007 1:15 am

Toshi is not a complete singer, his second elimination in a few weeks confirms that … each & every song sung by him sounds like Qawali or Folk or Sufi … he is not suitable for the run-of the mill and traditional kind of songs often composed in Bollywood.

  47. nagesh on November 4th, 2007 1:52 am

im tired of hearing comments like the one “Prem” has written. it doesnt always sound like qawalis or folk…what about “Khuda Bhi Aasman se” and “Saiya” and “Main Jahoon Rahoon”?

  48. TNB on November 4th, 2007 1:56 am

    Prem,
are u telling me u don’t listen to nusrat fateh ali khan, sukhwinder singh, kailash kher and many others ?? they too have a one-genre voice, and yet have been one of the very best. Just because someone’s voice suits a bunch of bollywood actors dosen’t make him a complete singer.

  49. irma on November 4th, 2007 2:10 am

TOSHI WAS DA BEST and brought da A-game….rocked da crowed and he was da ultimate performer. To hell wid VOI. He will make it huge one day.

  50. Raji on November 4th, 2007 2:49 am

The final results are a foregone conclusion because:
    1. WHATEVER Ishmeet sings, he still gets the highest number of votes
    2. HOWEVER Harshit sings, he still gets the highest number of votes
    3. WHATEVER and HOWEVER Abhaas sings, he still gets the lowest number of votes.

So, who is the winner of the STAR Voice of India title?

P.S.: A suggestion to STAR Channel and Gajendra Singh
In case, you decide to have STAR Voice of India II, kindly rename it STAR Inter-state Voice competition. It will end the controversy of state-based voting once and for all.
To start with, you can reanme the upcoming program as STAR Inter-State Chhote ustad competition!

Harshit has no more sangs left in his kitty it seems..

Dard-e-Disco was sang by Toshi and Om Shanti Om by Irfan..Is he trying to prove a point or two? Why even his vote appeal appeared to be inspired from Irfan and Toshi…

And I usually admire Abhas’s singing. But today he was not as good as he was made to be..

Pretty interesting comments. I was glad that Toshi was out of the show. Whether that remark sets off a set of rage or not I don’t care. Without Toshi, I enjoyed the show much more and I like all three contestants. I really don’t care who wins, they are all good. I had fun watching the show and that’s what its all about.

Abhijeet acted like a depressed puss…total lack of adult character. The show went on fine without Toshi. Who does not want to watch it —fine!

    First of all Zaki,

You write beautifully and you candid comments can never be ruled out. I completely agree with everything you said. Hats off to you buddy… keep sending such marvelous comments to keep the blues away.

I have a few observations to make on the 2nd Nov, show (I did not watch the 3rd Nov episode so commenting is out of question).

Abhaas sang ‘Yeh Hosla’, which is one of my all time fav songs. But I was wondering what the hell was wrong with him. I felt he could not sing any of the lines in tune and could not put in any kind of emotions into this beautiful song. Even Prasant Tamang (despite him not being a singer worth comparable to Abhaas) had sung it much much better than what Abhaas did with the song. Sorry Abhaas fans, but you must agree that he cannot connect with the people watching him, no matter how much he tries to dance on stage.

I don’t think I should comment anything on the performances by Harshit and Ishmeet cos they are not worth a mention.

Toshi outdid himself today… quoting Mahesh Bhatt - ‘Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant’. Words fall short when it comes to praising his performances on this episode - He has the ability to drive anyone crazy and has the true essence of a performer - getting the public involved.

I feel so proud today, to call myself a fan of such an unbelievably great singer that Toshi is. He has left an indelible mark on my mind and heart and after his Lagan Lagi and Piya Ghar Aaya, and simple yet touching ending lines, I felt myself falling gead over heels for him all over again.

This is only the beginning for TOSHI’s bright future as it is said, every ending leads to a new beginning or every cloud has a silver lining!

  60. DB on November 4th, 2007 4:10 am

2nd November episode showed something about the public voting and asking the public as to who their favorites are and who they are supporting. Surprisingly, most of the people asked were either vegetable sellers, taxi and auto drivers, a tea maker in a road side stall and very few others.

There is one thing I want to ask all of you..
How many of these Taxi drivers and vegetable sellers are rich enough to have cable TVs at home and how many have interest in reality shows? Fine even if this is ok, how many of them possess mobile phones to send sms or computers to vote online? How can they go on saying the name of Abhaas and Ishmeet (mostly abhaas). If they do not have the resouces to vote or even watch the programme, how do they know who abhaas or harshit or Ishmeet are?

It was very much clear from the way they spoke that they have been asked (taught) to say whatever they said just to prove a point that —– ‘Abhaas is getting more votes than Toshi according to public support and so expect Toshi to get eliminated’. It was just to prove this point so that the people watching do have have grievances against the show and the judges. In none of the previous episodes have they showed this.. why????? Because it was all PRE-PLANNED.

Also, even without looking at the envelop and the results (which were with the guest judges), how did Shaan say that Harshit has got the highest votes this week? It is obvious that all of them know the results from beforehand and what ever they say or do on stage are all part of the script and utmost hypocrisy and pretence.

Zaki and others, what do have to say on my observations?

  61. DB on November 4th, 2007 4:13 am

Sorry one correction to be made on whatever i wrote before this on my observations:

It was just to prove this point so that the people watching do have ‘NOT’ grievances against the show and the judges.

  62. DB on November 4th, 2007 4:44 am

After having said all of these, there is perhaps one person I’m really greatful to —

J, its you and I really want to thank you for launching this wonderful site and for taking out time, so that we could put forward our thoughts before the world. It feels really nice to know at the same time, that it was Toshi’s Teri Deewani that prompted to create this site.

There is one request I would like make to you. Would it be possible for you to launch a site dedicated completely to TOSHI and his fans? It can be a tribute from his fans to a great singer like him —- at least he will know there are people, even after his elimination, who still love him, care for him and will be with him forever.

The site could contain Toshi’s personal details such as his date of birth, likes and dislikes, his inspiration and love, his favorite songs and singers.. his family. This could be coupled with his photographs, and the videos of all the performances he has given on SVOI. The site can also content blogger’s corner where his fans can leave behind comments for him and for the world to know as well as another area which would give us the latest updates on his career.

I know it will take a lot of reasearch work and time behind this, but all of Toshi’s followers can help you in it. I don’t think we can trust anyone else to do this for us. It’s my earnest request on the behalf of all Toshi fans across the globe but whether you keep it or not depends is completely on your discretion. I do not know anyother web designer who we can fall back on.

I also have a suggestion for the name of the website:

All say that Toshi fans suffer from some illness known as ‘Toshi Mania’. So I’m thinking, why not make this name eternal by naming the site - http://www.toshimania.com?

Please do give me your feedback and what you and all the other Toshi fans think of this suggesstion. I’ll be waiting for your reply with all eagerness.

    BEYOND BOLLYWOOD

    Friends,

In my earlier post I had commented on our obsession with Bollywood in these reality shows.

It is widely acknowledged even within Bollywood circles that stage actors are far superior to film actors. Without going into the details what makes them superior is the ability to perform LIVE without retakes.

The same applies to singing. Some commentators have used the word “stage performer” in a derogatory sense in describing someone like Toshi. In fact I take it as the ultimate complement!

A stage singer who can sing live without any takes and retakes and can make the crowd go crazy is far superior to a singer who requires 10-20 retakes and punch-ins to get one song right.

Listening to live music is the ultimate experience in music. But you go to any “bollywood concert” these days and all you get is singers “lip-synching” and not even singing live. Why do the audiences accept this?
The answer is simple - they want to watch a famous person and dont really understand enough or care enough about music to give a damn!

Listen to any of the “untrained” Bollywood singers live on stage and you will realise how bad they sound. An Udit Narayan is a classic example of this. I must admit that “non-live” Udit Narayan is one of my all time favourite filmi singers. His voice literally drips melodious honey, but alas after many takes and retakes and technical sound correctsions. Listen to him live and he is literally BESURA. That is the magic of studio recording for you!

For this reason I would consider any stage singer of good quality to be far superior to MOST film singers in Bollywood.

Singers like Kailash Kher, Ghulam Ali, Mehndi Hassan, Jagjit Singh do not need Bollywood. But occassionally Bollywood needs them because Bollywood dosent have anyone who can perform to the level required.

But the run of the mill Bollywood singers will always need BOllywood!

My sincere hope is that Toshi realises his true potential. SVOI was too small a stage for a performer of his caliber and so is Bollywood.

It would be a waste of talent if Tohsi restricts himself to a limited Bollywood audience. The world is his stage.

I would like to conclude on a “opinionated note”!

There is no doubt that Toshi has been influnced by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In my opinion Toshi is a POTENTIALLY BETTER SINGER than Khan Saheb. I consider his voice to be far superior to the big man’s. A few more years of training and polish and he will outdo the big man. Another thing in his favour is his age and his far reaching potential appeal to the youth of the world.

    Cheers
    Zaki

  64. sanjaya on November 4th, 2007 5:04 am

The fans of Toshi are not music lovers. They are Toshi lovers. The fanaticism being displayed by them in the blogs is horrible. What Toshi is today only because of VOI. People now recognise him only because of VOI and the judges. The VOI gave him the TV exposure and the judges picked him in the final 12 from thousands. Again brought him back through WC after he got eliminated. To speak ill of judges and the show shows th ungratefulness of the Toshi fans. If that is not enough, to run a campaign to vote aginst another popular potential candiadte HArshit is simply obnoxious and shows the level to which people has stooped to. As long as Toshi was winning, the judges were secular and the moment he lost , the judges became communal.

Just enjoy good music and do not show fanaticism in the name of religion. I enoyed the Saturday episode as much as I enjoyed the earlier episodes.

  65. Zaki on November 4th, 2007 5:06 am

    Dear DB,

I think this idea of yours about launching http://www.toshimania.com is truly wonderful.

  66. DB on November 4th, 2007 5:27 am

Thanks Zaki…. Hope it works out!!!

    Cheers!

  67. DB on November 4th, 2007 5:36 am

Sanjaya, What’s wrong in being Toshi fanatics???? We are not doing anything to take away the votes from Harshit and any way, now that Toshi is out, why do you still have so much insecurity? Don’t worry hun, your Harshit win definitely win VOI anyway - but not through fanaticism but favoritism… HAHAHAHA!!!!!

And about exposure, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Naresh Iyer all come to fame through these kinds of exposure and I’m sure Toshi got it cos he deserved it more than any one else. I’m sure he will make it big too!!!

Stop worrying about votes and enjoy the remaining episodes of SVOI with Harshit showing off his unbelievably horrible voice. If you are not crazy for Harshit as we are for Toshi, then I must say, you too lack as much emotions as your fav contestant does. Toshi was always joshila and so are his fans!!!

Sajid wajid said said that public has brought him down but it is this very public who will pull you up.. And surely his fans will contribute everything to bring him to limelight!!

  68. kalyani on November 4th, 2007 6:12 am

god, whoever said that harshits dard -e- disco was good , must b either tone deaf or cant appreciate music, plain and simple harshit and ishmeet sucked big time on nov 3rd episode.it was miserable hearing them sing, and everytime ishmeet sang nache nache with his pronounciation, i winced and winced.definitely not play abck singing material, if u cant pronounce a simple word properly.and it was so obvious.
abhaas was also below par, tho not as much as the other two.
star voi is now sacche mediocre suron ki jai jai kar.!!hope abhaas gets eliminated. he should b ashamed of singing with mediocre singers, he is definitely a very versatile singer, a god given gift.all he has to do is practice, he will b on top soon enuff.
    cheers

  69. rossi on November 4th, 2007 6:25 am

    @kalyani

i toyally totally agree with u…listen to RAJA’s darde disco….that was the best…harshit’s was out og track…his innivations wasnt musical….i mean out of sur…i always found this guy has a limited RANGE of his voice though his voice is powerful…but the ups and downs of his voice has a short scale.

  70. kalyani on November 4th, 2007 7:01 am

rossi, u r right, harshit has the most powerful voice amongst all the male singers, that doesnt translate into a great singer. other singers are/were much better.and i still feel, irfan toshi and abhaas were/are the best among male singers.and priyani , sumithra were the best among the females.

  71. Kaiser Mukhtar on November 4th, 2007 8:00 am

It all looks like a BANDER TAMASHA with the remaining contestants. All are performing below par as there is no competition left its all fixed. As there were Irfan, Toshi and couple of others in the show even these 3 were trying hard and their utmost to be part of the game but as there is no threat left they have relaxed to the extent that they have come to their usual self what they really are capable of. That is the true face of them. They are really mediocres and not worth watching (sorry to say). Die hard fans can make anything of them but musicwise they are what they look like they are.
    Thanks.

Well i dont know what is ticking you off so much if people are frustrated and even if they are giving opinions which are not possible why are you loosing our head and getting so agressive…you are acting in the same way…and i think u are over reacting and giving comments like “Toshi is not a talent” well u are making a fool outta your self and u are questioning many greats of music who are all the “judges”…opinion with justification makes sense and i am sorry urs definitely donot…i wish the reamianing participant all the best and lets end it with that…

  74. Rahul on November 4th, 2007 10:40 am

    @ DB,

I think its a good idea to create “www.toshimania.com”. This would be an ideal place for Toshi fans to sing the glories of Toshi and pat each others back for doing a great job praising him.

  75. Harold on November 4th, 2007 11:14 am

Aks: I am not losing my head. I said that I had a favourite among the final 3 contestants, yet I don’t care about who wins. I like them all. That’s not fanatic behavior. I really think these guys are worth listening to - despite what all of the self-appointed music experts above say.

And if I sound agressive, it is not intentional, its just my nature.

  78. Rahul on November 4th, 2007 11:44 am

    @kalyani

    Yes… it shows.

  79. Zaki on November 4th, 2007 11:56 am

    Friends,

Many of you may be surprised with my opinion here..

Compared to Toshi and Irfans renditions of their songs which Harshit repeated, I found Harshit’s performances had less mistakes.

However, I found Harshit’s singing lacked feel and soul.

I now have a question for the die-hard Harshit fans.

When Harshit starts his playback singing career, will the music directors get another singer and record the song and then get Harshit to copy it, so that he does a better job?

I fully agree Harshit hits the right notes most of the times. He however lacks completely in originality and maturity.

He is not only copying (and failing miserably) Toshi and Irfan’s song and style, but even their vote appeal.

Even a playback singer requires some creativity. At this point in time Harshit has absolutely none. Just having a cinematic voice will not suffice. This fellow needs to find himself an Ustad and learn some music so that he broadens his musical horizons.

How many years did the Mohammed Rafi clones (there were many of them- Shabbir Kumar…. the list goes on) last?

Kumar Sanu was a poor Kishore Kumar clone and Harshit a poor Kumar Sanu clone, so where does that put him?

Why would you want a poor clones, poor clone?

    Originality will always prevail.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the script has been written from Day One for Harshit to win this title. It is now a mere formality.

Well done SVOI and many congratulations to the countless Harshit fans. I am sure you will get to see a typical filmi ending to this version of SVOI with Harshit being crowned King.

    What then?

I am happy to be in the limited Toshi fan club awaiting his first release.

    Cheers
    Zaki

And your racist comments about us Being Toshi fanatics just proves what your background is. For your kind information- Toshi fans are not limited to a particular religion or region. It is definately limited to music lovers with knowledge and appreciation of real talent.

  82. Prem on November 4th, 2007 1:36 pm

    @ TNB

Well I like listening to ‘melodic’ songs, I hardly listen to Sukwinder or Kailash (both are one dimensional and hardly offer any variety to stay tuned for more)

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is one of my all time favorites, he is a muscial genius and the greatest ever sufi singer (Mussarrat’s sufi rendition on SaReGaMa’s was outstanding and much superior than Toshi)

Toshi is a good singer but very limited (he would be more successful on stage shows and personal albums than singing for Bollywood songs)

The bitter truth is Irfan is far more superior, talented and versatile than Toshi (he should be lucky that he got a second chance to show-case his one dimensional skill)

All those self proclimed knowledgeable people who are berating Harshit’s singing ability think that Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghosal, Jagjit singh, Pankaj Udhas, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Sonu Nigam, Mahesh Bhatt, Sajid-wajid, Salim- Suleiman, Pritam,Atif Aslam, etc. who have rated Harshit very highly are fools.

  86. Mona on November 4th, 2007 2:55 pm

I really feel very bad to watch last episode that Toshi has eliminated i think Toshi is the best contestant he derserved the title of VOI. I think in VOI the most deserving contestants are TOSHI, Abhilasha and Irfan but the role of judges except Abhijeet play a negative role. Lalit and Ahdesh always support Hershit i don’t know why? Hershit always gain people attention to say MEREEE DADI MAAA KA SAPNA HAI….. what the hell he is doing? He is making us fool. Infact in VOI everybody wants new voice but hershit sings like Kumar Sanu i think no one of VOI belongs to a very rich family all are from middle class and some are from lower middle class i think shaan and Jatin are suporting ABBASS and abbass attitude showing that he is very over confident and his voice is just like childish voice and no hero want abbaass that abbass sing as a play back singer for him. Do u remeber in Wild card entry the most senior judges chose 4 contestants (Ashpreet, Toshi, Prantik and Priyani) But Jatin used his vEETO i think at that time when these senior judges chose these contestant b/c of their ability and talent if ABBASS voice attract them definitely they will choose him but at that time he didn’t inspire judges b/c of his childish voice. I don’t understand why Jatin used Veeto b/c he likes ABBASS and i felt there was no need of VEETO at that time all contestants are equal. In my view Abhilasha , Irfan and Toshi’s voice are the best voices of VOI and now I see there is no healthy compitition in VOI without these three. I also observed that Adhesh gave a staid and stunned attitude when Abhilasha and Irfan performed he is very extremist he only takes a side of his team i think he should be nuetral as Abhijeet and i am vey sad when i saw the Irfan elimination episode at that time of elimination Alka was too happy for Harshit and shaan also. Alka role is very crucial for the very first episode she always takes side for AGNI and point out the mistakes of PRITHVI this is not fair i think Agni’s mentor never say anything infront of anyone but Alka always do this thing b/c judges argument gives impact on janta’s voting. Overall I am not happy and i am very dissappointed to see VOI results and I feel there is something missing and wrong going in this program. And now i want to see Ishmeet as a VOI Winner. He is simple and his voice is sweet and always touches our heart. Plz Lalit and Adhesh stop saying stupid things for simple Ishmeet.

No doubt all of them are good…i was referring to ur statement “Now we won’t have fanaticism, we will have talent.” Look all the judges have recognised the talent of toshi and other singers these statemets sound vague…Secondly it comes from u that Abhas may be the victim of the voting…obviously u dont have faith in voting system and thats what pissin most ppl off…i hope the best contestant from here on in and i am counting on Abhas or harshit and ishmeet for me has not been consistent enough to be here…but i fear he may walk off with VOI since Punjabis are voting too much for him…and that wont be fair to anyone

Some of your fellow Toshi fans have been heavily criticising the voting system etc. I do believe it is warped, and if anyone is pissed - so be it. I have some distubing news for all of you. This news was delivered to me by an inside source.

Toshis elimination was not because he got less votes. Toshi withdrew himself from the show due the politics that had taken over. He was extremely upset and so was alka yagnik and abhijeet. However due to the contract between the show and participants they had to create a drama and show the public that he had reciveved the lowest votes.

abhijeet also wanted to quit, but again they convinced him to stay.

Look who’s talking about “religiuos grounds”. None of the Toshi-Irfan fans have ever appreciated the performances of anyone else except these two.

    What a bunch of hypocrites!

I hate the New England Patriots…whatever..the colts will get them in the Super Bowl

    Mr Zaki,
You said its not worth watching voice of India. Please don’t . If I see your comment again on this site then I will say , you are watching.
God bless you with you good thinking. I pray to God WHO IS ONLY ONE to give you some kind of blessing either YOU SING OR YOUR KIDS.Please fpr get about the TOSHI MANIA. YOU WILL SEE LOTS OF HIS GOOD SINGING NEAR FUTURE. All The judges are making fool for Ishmit. I feel sorry for this kid. They want him out. The best part millions of people love him and thats the reason he is still hanging in the beautiful VOI. Again All these shows looking for the voice which can suit the Industry. BIG SINGER NUSRAT FATHEY ALI KHAN

  101. MusicBuff on November 4th, 2007 10:51 pm

I dont want to comment on the politics in SVOI, which has been very evident from the very episode when they formed Agni and Prithvi.
I just want to convey my feelings on the 3rd Nov episode. It was a disgusting show. All the performances were below par. Most of the songs sung in this episode have also been sung by contestants of SRGMP Challenge 2007, and SRGMP performances were far more superior to these. Abhaas who is so over-hyped, was very mediocre in Yeh Hosla. You should watch this one from SRGMP.

Prem and Harold - could not agree with you more. I can totally relate to your frustration related to Toshi. The most hilarious thing is that Toshi fans who vowed to not watch VOI ever again as it was over for them after Toshi waa gone, are back in full force and seems they could not stop themselves from watching VOI. He he he! Don’t blame you all at all. I know you wanted to listen to the remaining three talented contestants! Surely all of them have their unique characteristics or would not have come so far. My personal favorite is Aabhas - full of talent, energy, charisma and confidence. He has a long way to go! May the best contestant win!

  103. nagesh on November 4th, 2007 11:29 pm

nice sman, how long did it take you to come up with that?

  104. AS on November 5th, 2007 12:28 am

    Best of this site

You may be wondering that this is little early to post such message here…But if you have read any of my earlier comments you would know it is not. Anyways here are my thoughts, not in any particular order:

Toshi: Well, he has been the inspiration for the launch of this site. A lot has already been written about him. And I think I can sum up my comments with just two words “Toshi Rocks”.

J, I know you had mentioned somewhere on your site that you do not like statements unless they are substantiated. But I guess this one is on the verge of becoming a universal fact…so no proof required! :)

Zaki: I have not learnt music…but have always liked it though sometimes I wish I should have known those technical details. Your comments have helped me satiate that desire many times. Thanks Zaki for all the knowledge.

Rossi: What more can I say about you? Apart from being an ardent Toshi fan and music admirer, you are an equivalent of “Encyclopedia Britannica” on this site!

And last but not the least, J: For launching this site and your consistent efforts in maintaining it. I like your balanced opinion as a commentator on the show as much as your occasional sense of humor!

  105. rovino on November 5th, 2007 12:46 am

    Oh Jimmy ,
Do you see All the Judges What are they trying to do. Feel sorry for poor guy Ishmit. Of course he need more trainning but still he is the best of this lot. Any body get offended please forgive me. God Bless Yopu;.

  106. Aks on November 5th, 2007 3:10 am

You are entitled to an opinion but it is definitely a wrong one

  107. Karishma on November 5th, 2007 9:57 am

I totally agree with people above that there is lots of racism going on in these shows first it was saregamapa now svoi. I know some people will say its all crap this is not true. I agree with people above that toshi and irfan has been voted out because they are muslim and next will be ishmeet. Now to those who say no this is not true then look at saregamapa who could have thought that aneek will win but not amanat or raja from the very first episode raja and amanat been the best but because they were muslim they have been voted out. And guys the reality is no matter how much we say that there is no communalism in india the truth is there is and this is the proof. First sharib, raja, amanat and now toshi and next is Ishmeet its gonna be either harishit or abhas. And nagesh truth hurts but sman is right.

  108. pihu on November 5th, 2007 11:34 am

Guys, A question After winning these contest how many singers can survive.Debojit just playing antaksri.Singers does not have a long life these days.Where is babul supriyo. He used to judge all programmes.
As I write before they can accompany other singers but still they have long way to go, singing their own songs and make it a hit song is the journey. Delhi is way faaaaaaaaaaaaaar for them

  109. pihu on November 5th, 2007 11:37 am

Racism I want to comment on that. Indians can love Atif and Adnan sami, Rahat fateh ali khan ,Nusrat fateh ali kahn Saheb then they can love their own country people too.Shahrukh salman and etc……………so please dont talk rubbish please.

  110. Karla on November 5th, 2007 1:20 pm

Harold, I have no idea what is your problem. You have your deepest wishes fulfilled, don’t you - to see Toshi eliminated. Now since there is no competition for the other losers, why can’t you just leave Toshi alone. Expired singer indeed- Your brain is past its expiration date! We do not want to get nasty but you are leaving us no choice with you dumb comments. If you do not want us to dissect the remaining losers bit by bit, leave Toshi alone. If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything bad or we will give you Tit for Tat.

  111. Basit on November 5th, 2007 1:52 pm

    Dear j/Blog friends,
I agree on most of the points u maid. And this is not the first time we are disapponted from this show, there have been many sub-standard episodes already.

I must admit that the spark of this show has gone with the elimination of Toshi. Its evident he was pushing each contestent to their limit best to compete for the title and quality singing. But this episode gave the impression that each of the remaining one is already consiedring himself to be the winner, there seemed no real effort and the guys were too complacent.

And, the credit of this dull show must go to the “creative team” who chalked out the theme of this episode. I don’t know to which contestent they were trying to give the advantage by this “Disco theme” but they surely did it at the expense of music. Just in the previous episode, Music was the real winner but today the msuic was stabbed……what a pity.

Again the guy who suffered most from this ridiculous theme (and the songs given to him) was poor Ishmeet and it was another move to demoralise and discredit this innocent singer in the eyes of the audience. I have a strong suspicion that the “movers n shakers” of this show are doing everyting they can to stop Ishmeet for going forward but he is such a mannered and diginfied guy (along with his melodious voice), the Divine force is taking care for him.

Talking about the judges, as I mentioned sometimes before, Gajji made a wrong choice in haste. To me, all of them should not be sitting there where they are now. They just behave like immature kids and this lalit guy is too biased and the pity is he has never passed a technical comment but “wah wah…zabbardast..” for his favourites and very ill-tuned ones for others. Simply speaking, they are bunch of jokers…

My take on the singers of this show who made impression to me:
Toshi was definitely the spark of this show, a technically correct singer, and a true entertainer who touched the heart n soul of the audiences. Bollywood or not, he has the potential to be one of the most respected icons in music industry and learned music people.

Ishmeet has melodious voice which suits most of the bollywood singing and I hope he will score big. Irfan was very hardworking and somewhat having unique voice which will give him edge in developing his career. Abhas has huge potential to become a versatile singer, he just needs a bit more grooming and maturity in his singing which will definitely come with the time as he is too young.
Considering the the situation we have, I again wish n pray for Ishmeet to win this contest and this will in a way be victory against unfairness and slap on the faces of all those who are part of that “Unfair team” doing this malpractice with music..

    Regards.
    Basit

  112. rovino on November 5th, 2007 5:15 pm

    Basit, I agree with you

  113. Sesh on November 5th, 2007 9:46 pm

I see some of you guys think some of the contestants are let down because of their religion. I think more than what religion you are, what region you belong to is the only factor deciding your fate in such competitions. States in India are not equally populated.. I say normalize the votes that each contestant gets from their state with the state’s population. How hard is it to do that? Then you have a fair game. UP’s population is almost twice that of the states which most contestants belong to. That does not really seem fair…nothing against Harshit though. All these contestants really go through a lot, to prepare their best and perform their best before a national audience. They at least deserve to a fair play. what do you thin guys?

  116. Najia Sherzad on November 7th, 2007 5:51 am

    Dear Zaki,
You have helped all of so much to have a broad view about Toshi’s talent. Since i heared him singing the first time i have become his big fan. I really love his voice, talent and energy. He is a perfect technical singer. The way he performs is superb, he is not only a master in singing but a great performer as well.
I really regret that he is voted out from SVOI. He was the perfect SVOI. I wish him all the best, i am sure he will find his success soon inshallah.

I am from Afghanistan, and have been twice in India this year, i won’t mind to visit it again in December, with the hope to meet Toshi…i am not sure if i can meet him up there. Can anybody help me with his contact number,, will be great.

    Thanks
    Najia

  121. Sara on November 13th, 2007 4:29 am

It will be appreciated if someone would take time out to explain what this show is about. Is it a hunt for a good voice (raw) that can be groomed
and mentored. As the name seems to suggest or are they looking for a trained singer.then the show should have been called Singer of india and accomplished singers like Sonu Nigam Shaan
abhijit alka and co should be competing

  122. Mohammed Hassan on November 13th, 2007 9:35 pm

This is a message for Toshi. It was very disappointing to see you get eliminated. Insha Allah you will be very successful in the near future. To many people you will actually be the true winner of Voice of India.

All your performances were excellent. If you wish to do a couple of shows in Auckland, New Zealand, I can organise that for you. You were the most deserving contestant of all on Voice of India.

All the Judges & the Public should realize that they already LOST THE VOICE OF INDIA, when TOSHI & ABHAS got eliminated. I personally think that Hershit & Ishmeet both have JUST THE ORDINARY VOICEs, I don’t think neither one of them should be called VOI.

Now, since Toshi, Abhas, & Irfan are gone the show lost its interest.
