Music has no boundry

This post is not about Voice Of India.

I am a music lover by heart and I just caught a gem of a performance on competing show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. On 28th September, SRGMP had gazal special where Jagjit Singhji and Jashraji were guest judges. There were lot of very good performances but ‘Kuhu Kuhu Bolye Payaliya’ by Poonam was just outstanding.

Experts say that this classical song is a difficult song and Poonam did a fantastic job even though she is not classically trained. I really can’t stop myself from publishing this video. I am sure my readers are also music lover and they will really enjoy it. And another tip: watch the entire gazal special, some superb performances are there.

Comments from our resident expert SN:

Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya is one of the most difficult film songs to sing because of two reasons. One is because of the simultaneous high and low range notes in the song and the need to have a strong classical background. The delivery of the long and intricate taans cannot be rendered without having a strong control on the voice and deep understanding of the raag. Second is because of the variation in the raags for each antara. The mukhda is in raag sohoni, whereas each antara is set in a different raag (e.g. yaman, basant, and so on).

Poonam did a fantastic job of presenting the song without going offnote or offbeat even once. Moreover, she chose the most difficult antara in the song in raag yaman. Sohoni and yaman are very different raags in terms of mood as well as notes and she transitioned between these raags very skillfully without creating a break or going offnote. Moreover, her taans in both sargam (sa, re, ga, ma, pa) and aakar were just amazing.

Poonam has a very strong and sharp voice and she sings with a power and emphasis, which is not suited for all the songs. But her voice and style was perfect for this song. That is why Pt. Jasraj advised her to sing classical based songs. Her khula and strong voice is perfect to sing such difficult songs. Although she does not have a classical background, her mentor Ismail Darbar has a keen understanding of classical music, which is evident in this beautiful compositions. He must have played a very important role in training her for this difficult song and helping her overcome her faults. You could see from his expressions how he was reacting to every taan and variation as if he had the whole rendition memorized.

Full ten points to her and Ismail Darbar!!

Request to Gajendra Singh: Let’s have a gazal/classical special on Voice of India.

A classical/ghazal round will definitely be very nice, I agree.

  3. niranjan on September 29th, 2007 2:08 am

This should be as early as possible when all the good singers are still there.

Poonam has always sang really well! She has a very powerful voice.. I wonder where she learned all that from? does anyone know? There is a lot to learn from this young girl! I was really amazed to learn today that she also has an adopted daughter!
That is something so great that we can learn from her.
God bless you Poonam and Thanx to Saregama show to bring out talents like you!
    You are simply divine!

    Hello Dear ‘J’

I really thank you for putting time and effort on making this site. I know how much time it takes on websites! Really thank you for all the effort!

I was wondering if you would be able to put the ghazals from Saregama show today. They sang so great today in that show. As a music lover I love good music wherever it is and whoever sings. I love Anik’s voice. He is a truly god gifted singer who I truly believe soon will take over the bollywood singers! He is a very powerful singer!

I feel that VOI has no good singers now, except Abhilasha. Its such a shame that the whole voting system was so regional and thats why great singers like Toshi, Abhas, and Priyani didnt get enough votes.

BUT what I really didnt understand that how come judges didnt choose Abhaas.. I really dont get it. Cause I have watched the show and he was super! He was one of the best! Now I am doubting the intention of the judges.. I really dont understand!

I think what Abhijeet has done in ladt episode, singling out out a contestant that he does not deserve a place in finals, he should be ashamed of himself. Whatever some fan among the billion of Indians have SMS, the contestant should not be held guilty for that.

I think, not the contestsnt, but Abhijeet should be thrown out of the programme(not thrown but kicket out).

  7. Prem on September 29th, 2007 1:38 pm

    Excellent !

Top stuff … she is so pretty and highly talented

Hope she wins ….. Good Luck !

Abhijit attacking Ishmeet on the show the very sad. I cannot believe the Abhijit is such bigot and is so biased. I think the next one voted off the show is Abhijit, we do not need people like him that come on the show and so biased. I do not know if Ishmeet is the best singer on the show, but he has the best heart of anyone on the show. The poor boy was so hurt and cried by his heart getting broken by his own mentor but would not say anything agianst anyone. It make me sick when I see bigots like Abhijit on the show.

I feel very sorry for Ishmit to hear this kind of irrational and rediciolus comments from this Judge ,Abhijet or whoever the hell he is. I watch this show from Canada and I love this show so far. However, the latest episode was kind of disappointing because of this stupid comment. every participants did fabelous specialy Harshit and Irfan. one more thing I wanna share with you guys, that is, this wild card round thing, I am not to say I do not like those participant who were eliminated , however having said this it does not mean whoever gets eliminated should get another chance to come back. if this is the case then every single of this singers have the right to come back when they are being eliminated. I agree that Toshi was not or should not have been eliminated but this part of the game, not every one wins. I hope my comments has not offended any one all I wanted to express my point. Finaly , great job every one in Star voice of India, except this ignorant judge, and good bless all Hindustanies.

    Dear sir,
Thanks for your this nice show of VOI, We are also very appriciate your this wil card entry, for this entry you will give chance to public rectify our faults,
we hope toshi is most powerfull contastan for VOI. He is perfectly deserve for this compition.
Only Abhilasha are not able for this contast but she is favourite of Alka Yagnik’s, but she is perfectly not able for this contast, when judge say for wild card entry, she were say very wrong, she is surly want to eliminated.
We are 100% sure Toshi is come back in this show and he will VOI.
    Thanks

You all guys wrong expectaions from Abhijeet cause he was angry, cause some peopls SMS to Adaish for u all judjes wants ishmeet out to competion, thats all so Adaish & Abhijeet was very angry about those comments,in my opinion all judges specilly ALKA & Abhijeet are very honest & confident to all particepents offcourse ishmeet is not a higer level of sur taal singer like compare to Abas, toshi & irfan, he is still choosing simple songs for his eas, thats not true.

  13. Prem on September 30th, 2007 3:59 pm

    Kunal,

So truly said. I have been following the judges comments for a while and they have mostly been very fair. I have seen Aadesh/Lalit take the music side and ignore the voice quality (and sur) by saying that it doesnt sound like the original composition (of course it wont and it should NOT) - But Abhijit and Alka especially have been very good in judging.

Ishmeet is an OK singer. He picks the mellow easy numbers. He is good. But, should he be in the game when Aabhas/Toshi/Priyani/Harshpreet are out…No way…Cmon, lets be fair. How is he pulling ahead - Because of being bullish on the vots somehow. Why does he have to cry like a baby for everything? Simply to create that poor guy image. There was an element of truth in eveything that was said. He should be happy he got this far..which itself is too much in my opinion.

Ignore the melodrama guys and look at the quality. All the other stuff is immaterial. This is voice of India NOT “Sentiment of India”.

  14. Anusha on October 1st, 2007 5:10 am

Poonam did a fantastic job with this song…I have not heard many singers (was there anyone who dared to sing this one?) attempt this one in the good old days when the participants regularly sang classical based songs…and is it only me or are there other’s who feel that Poonam is better than Aneek?

All said and dont, just this one episode takes SRGMP way ahead of VOI..And though I would want to see a classical based episode in VOI, I don’t know if singers like Ishmeet will be able to carry it with elan..Harshit has been very good singing popular numbers but I don’t remember him attempting a really really tough song except probably Rut aa gayi re..(and with this one statement, I think I might have triggered a controversy!!)

We should definitely have it if Toshi and Abhaas come back which they should considering the public support and judges support that these two have. It will be interesting to see Toshi and Abhaas contest.

just also want to say that. POONAM HAD SUNG DER NAH HOJAYE (HENNA) ASHPREET WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO POONAM . POONAM AN EXECELLENT SINGER because of less vote she had to go to me she is a winner.

poonam has a superb and awesome voice i cannot even say SVOI HAS anything closer to her in female singer.

  16. Sonia on October 3rd, 2007 12:08 am

    Hi to all of you.

This is the first time that I have visited this site, as I have been only to SRGMP sites. You will be surprised to know that Poonam sang the following songs:

Hungama ho gaya - Anhone - very much like Asha Bhosle, in front of Ashaji herself
Taare hain Barati - Virasat - slightly better than the original
Ni Main Samajh Gayee - Taal - better than original, Richa Sharma the singer called up Poonam and told her “unke rongte khade ho gaye” listening to Poonam.
Kuhu Kuhu Bole - Swarn Sundari - better than the original
Der na ho jaye - Henna - very much like Lataji
Dil to pagal hai - Dil to pagal Hai- very much like Lataji
Range de - Thankshak ——— very much like Ashaji

You may also note that her voice is so clear like Lataji yet she has a lot of thump and bass in her voice, very much like Ashaji.

Unfortunately she has not been offered any song, though people who are a lot worse have been offered contracts left right and centre. I have also talked to her over the phone, She is very down to earth and simple person.
