Expert Commentator for Voice Of India Show
Hey Fellas,
I have found someone who is expert in music, her name is ‘SN’. She understands classical music and even though she decided not to watch VoI after Toshi’s exit, she agreed to comment on VoI performances on my request. Thanks SN! Without much ado, here’s her analysis for the last week’s performance:
Analysis for 15th September Episode
It is very evident from the episode that the judges are punishing the singers for attempting difficult songs. Abhaas, Ishmeet, and Sumitra got higher points than Irfan because they chose extremely simple songs with limited ranges, few variations, and flat notes. It is very difficult to judge superiority in such songs because any singer with some basic level of proficiency can sing these songs without making a mistake.
Abhaas, Ishmeet and Sumitra are not classically trained and it is evident in their singing. They have consistently chosen simple, straight (little or no variations), and non-classical songs. Moreover, they sing very cautiously and lack ease of singing that was demonstrated by singers like Toshi, and at times Harshit (Rut Aa Gayi Re).
Sumitra’s song [Mayi Ni Mayi ] was one of the simplest songs in today’s episode and she was off note (besura) twice in that simple song. Sumitra also does not sing in her genuine (khula) voice. That is why her slow notes are not stable. She can cover up her lack of control on her voice in fast songs. But her limitations are most evident in slow songs.
Abhaas [ Mujhse Shaadi Karogi ] and Ishmeet [ Chal Pyar Karegi ] sing straight songs quite well. I have never heard them go off note or off beat in any song. Moreover, Abhaas has a better understanding of the “bhaav” or “emotion” in the songs than the other five singers. However, his voice is not very mature because he is young.
Today, Irfan sang an extremely difficult song [ Rabba Rabba Me Barsa ] , sung originally by Sukhwinder Singh. I have to admit that he could not do justice to the song. First of all, the pitch of the original song is at least two levels higher than the pitch in which Irfan sang. Very few established singers can match Sukhwinder’s range. So it is not surprising that Irfan could not match it. Second, Irfan went off note (besura) thrice at very high notes (aj mera variation). Third, Irfan lacked the power that is needed to sing the traditional Punjabi folk songs. His rendition of the song was somewhat lukewarm compared to the original song. Finally, his fatigue was clearly evident by the end of the song. His voice sounded strained and he missed the higher notes. Should he be punished and given lower points for his mistakes than Abhaas, Ishmeet, and Sumitra? Absolutely not! The judges should encourage the singers to take the risks and sing difficult songs and reward them accordingly. It is only through such difficult songs that the audience can differentiate between superior and mediocre singers. The judges should have given Irfan the same points as, or may be even higher points than, Abhaas, Ishmeet, and Sumitra.
Harsheet sang today’s song [ Ek Punjaban ] quite well. He did not go offnote, offbeat, or miss the high notes. However, his song was not as difficult as Irfan’s. Moreover, one of the issues that I have with Harshit is that he is too much of a “copycat” singer. He tries to sing each song in a different voice to mimic the original singer. He has never improvised any song or varied even slightly from the original song. Toshi was the best in improvisation and creativity because of his strong classical training. His renditions of Teri Deewani, Piya Re, and his last performance are much superior to original songs. What a pity he is gone!!
Finally, Abhilaasha’s performance [ Rani Beti Raaj Karegi ] was quite lukewarm and I do not think she deserved the high praise that she received from the judges. The bidai song that she sang was in raag desh. Abhilaasha does not sing in an open voice and as a result, she cannot hold a note for a long time. Her notes become unstable and waiver. She also does not have adequate control of breath and you can hear her breath clearly. She needs to improve on that. She could not sing the low notes properly. She became besura at least twice (on the phrase raja mila). This song was a beautiful song with lots of scope for phirkatis (variations). Unfortunately, she did not show any variations and sang it very flatly. I am really surprised that the judges gave her full points on her singing.
One of the things that I have noticed about the neutral judge (Jatin??) is that he gives 9 points to just about everyone. How can that be possible? How can everyone sing at the same level?

if SN reads this then please reply me by saying that whether she will vote for toshi or not
Dear SN,
I would like to put in a few comments about your analysis.
This contest is primarily for finding a playback singer. A person very good in classical music only will not be suited for playback.
Classical music is always emotionless while in playback the important thing is to inject emotion.
Have you ever heard a sad classical song?
A good playback singer should have a correct mix of classical grounding and emotional content and a versatility to sing different types of songs. The overall impact of the song counts.
In my view, Abhilasha is the best not only in this group (even including Toshi), not only in all music shows currently going on, also one of the best ever.
She certainly is a little immature now. But she can still go up whereas the others have reached their maximum. In a year or max 2 years, she will become the greatest.
30th september? That’s my b-day!
I’m be ready to vote for him…. xD xD
Niranjan..I totally agree wt ya!
Niranjan i totally 100% agree with your comment….i couldnt have written a better comment myself….i cant believe there are some people finding fault with Abhilasha….she’s got PURE TALENT AND IS A NATURAL SINGER…
Almost everyone knows that Abhilasha is the best voice and as niranjan put it just give her one more year and she’ll be the best female playback singer in India. She absolutely deserves to win this contest…As Abhileet said on last sunday’s episode SHE’S THE BEST….
ABHILASHA is best.
Abhilasha has immaturity written all over her and has been very inconsistent in her singing. She does not open her mouth and sing nor does she show emotion in her songs. Her songs are technically correct but without ANY SOUL and FEELING ! In fact when I say technically correct, I mean she only sometimes takes the right ‘gamakam’ at the right places.
The above comment is ditto for Harshit and Irfan, albeit the immaturity.
Two singers who definitely deserved to be in the top two are Abhaas and Toshi ONLY!!!
I am sure that there are many who will agree with me on this.
[...] week, I posted comments from SN, who analyzed VoI performances and gave her comments. Another reader Niranjan didn’t agree with her and responded: [...]
