This post is not about Voice Of India.
I am a music lover by heart and I just caught a gem of a performance on competing show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. On 28th September, SRGMP had gazal special where Jagjit Singhji and Jashraji were guest judges. There were lot of very good performances but ‘Kuhu Kuhu Bolye Payaliya’ by Poonam was just outstanding.
Experts say that this classical song is a difficult song and Poonam did a fantastic job even though she is not classically trained. I really can’t stop myself from publishing this video. I am sure my readers are also music lover and they will really enjoy it. And another tip: watch the entire gazal special, some superb performances are there.
Comments from our resident expert SN:
Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya is one of the most difficult film songs to sing because of two reasons. One is because of the simultaneous high and low range notes in the song and the need to have a strong classical background. The delivery of the long and intricate taans cannot be rendered without having a strong control on the voice and deep understanding of the raag. Second is because of the variation in the raags for each antara. The mukhda is in raag sohoni, whereas each antara is set in a different raag (e.g. yaman, basant, and so on).
Poonam did a fantastic job of presenting the song without going offnote or offbeat even once. Moreover, she chose the most difficult antara in the song in raag yaman. Sohoni and yaman are very different raags in terms of mood as well as notes and she transitioned between these raags very skillfully without creating a break or going offnote. Moreover, her taans in both sargam (sa, re, ga, ma, pa) and aakar were just amazing.
Poonam has a very strong and sharp voice and she sings with a power and emphasis, which is not suited for all the songs. But her voice and style was perfect for this song. That is why Pt. Jasraj advised her to sing classical based songs. Her khula and strong voice is perfect to sing such difficult songs. Although she does not have a classical background, her mentor Ismail Darbar has a keen understanding of classical music, which is evident in this beautiful compositions. He must have played a very important role in training her for this difficult song and helping her overcome her faults. You could see from his expressions how he was reacting to every taan and variation as if he had the whole rendition memorized.
Full ten points to her and Ismail Darbar!!
Request to Gajendra Singh: Let’s have a gazal/classical special on Voice of India.
Wildcard round winners
Update: 5th October episode is out and Toshi, Abhaas and Priyani are selected! Click here to watch results section of 5th October episode.
In 28th September episode, we learn that following are the winners from wild card round.
1. Toshi
2. Arshpreet
3. Priyani
4. Prantik
It is interesting to note that those guest judges did not select Abhaas. Apparently, Jatin used the ‘veto power’ and brought Abhaas in as well. I should note here that last week when I posted a poll about who performed well in wild card episode, lot of readers voted for Prantik (around 25% votes compared to 31% votes for Toshi). So I must say that readers of my site understand what good music is about.
Abhijeet also asked to give Sumitra another chance in wild card round and Gajendra confirmed that. So on Saturday, 29th September, we will have performances by following contestants:
Toshi, Priyani, Prantik, Sumitra, Abhaas, Arshpreet.
I think it would be REALLY difficult to select one participant from these 5 contestants. Let’s see how it goes.

All the videos of 28th September Episode have been uploaded. Except Abhilasha, everyone sang well. I personally liked Ishmit’s performance the most. What was your favorite performance?

What’s up with Abhijeet? Has he grown hair and lost his brains? You won’t believe what he said.
He said that there is one contestant in our Prithvi team who should have been eliminated long a while back. If he said that out of these 3, Ishmit should have been eliminated it would have probably made sense. But saying that Ishmit is here in Top 5 solely because of public votes is just ridiculous. If that was the case then why did you select him in Top 12? When Shaan declares that Ishmit is safe, he is not happy. He didn’t say a word and goes back to Harshit and Irfan. You can see that he is hurt and tears come in to his eyes. And I would be hurt too if I was in his place.
I don’t know why Alka acted as if she doesn’t know why Ishmit is hurt. Shaan, for whom I have a very high regard, he is an excellent host, tried to handle the situation. And I am glad that Ishmit didn’t say anything against anyone when Shaan asked him to say ‘Dil Ki Baat’, it would have just made things worse. And yes, this will basically mean more and more votes for Ishmit. Plain and Simple.
Irfan sings Dil Chahta Hai
Finally we have Irfan on stage and he sings ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. It’s one of my favorite song and Irfan sang it beautifully. Very good performance.
Ehsaan commented that it’s a very difficult song and he did a very good job and Ehsaan liked that he was very comfortable on the stage.
